I will work hard for government accountability

By: SHERIFF STEVE OELRICH
Published in the Gainesville Sun

Over the years, I have made decisions, not based upon what is politically popular or partisan, but to do what's right. Some may have disagreed with certain decisions, but at least they know where I stood. I will bring a unique, commonsense approach to the issues that come forth in the Legislature.

The following are the common-sense principles I commit to bring to the State Capitol as your next State Senator:

  • Oppose each and every tax increase that comes up for a vote.

  • Prosecute criminal predators who target seniors and the youth.

  • Increase access to quality health care and prescription drugs.

  • Move 65 percent of every taxpayer dollar spent on education directly into the classroom.

We need more accountability in government, not less. We need to eliminate duplicative, unnecessary and inefficient government programs. I see no reason why a citizen should spend hours trying to get a simple answer or even try in vain to have to reach the "correct" official in a state government agency. The government works for us; we do not work for them.

For the past 14 years, I have had the honor of serving as your sheriff in Alachua County. I am blessed and fortunate to be able to work with heroes each and every day.

My campaign will be based on my core values and the voters' needs and concerns. I believe all of our elected officials should be leaders who are honest and trustworthy. That's my bottom line.

Thanks for reading about my candidacy and our campaign platform. Please call my headquarters to talk about the issues or if you just want to talk about the campaign.

Steve Oelrich is a Republican running for the Florida Senate District 14 seat. His name will appear on the Sept. 5 primary election ballot.
