Palatka Daily NewsThe candidates are set
for the general election in the District 14 state
Senate race.
In the Republican primary, Alachua County
Sheriff Steve Oelrich led Gainesville businessman
Travis Horn, 62 percent to 38 percent, with 93
percent of precincts reporting.
“I feel pretty good, better than I did four or
five hours ago,” Oelrich said at about 10 p.m.,
minutes before the race was called by the
Associated Press.
District 14 includes 11 precincts in western
Putnam County.
Oelrich led Horn by a final vote of 545 to 289
in Putnam.
Oelrich said he thought his success at the
polls came in part because of voters’ familiarity
with him.
“Steve Oelrich is a known quantity,” Oelrich
said. “I’ve met a lot of challenges in my years as
sheriff and I’ve met them all with honesty and
integrity. The task now is to reach as many of the
400,000 people in the district as possible and let
them know what we’re going to do in North Central
Florida and statewide.”
Horn was not available late Monday night.
In the Democratic primary, the Associated Press
called the race at about 10:30 p.m. for Rep. Ed
Jennings Jr., D-Gainesville, who at 11 p.m. led
former Gainesville mayor and state Rep. Perry
McGriff 56 to 44 percent with approximately 93
percent of precincts reporting.
Jennings led McGriff 679 to 594 in Putnam
County.
No one answered the phone at Jennings’
headquarters late Tuesday night and a spokesperson
for McGriff was not available for comment. |
